Fact Check: Did the Global Seed Vault Flood Because of Global Warming?

On Friday, May 19, the Guardian and Wired ran stories claiming that melting permafrost had put the Global Seed Vault at risk. Their claims boiled down to the following:

  • Melting permafrost had flooded the facility because of record-warm winter temperatures.
  • Water in the entryway caught facility managers by surprise and endangered the seeds.

But these reports weren't quite right. Popular Science then published a piece explaining that the reported worse-than-ever flooding was actually somewhat routine. According to the article:

  • Water seeps into the entryway every year, according to Cary Fowler who spearheaded the vault's creation.
  • The front of the facility was designed to divert water runoff, and the seed storage is uphill of the tunnel entrance.
One reason the initial story caught on so quickly is that it plays into a key misconception about the Seed Vault: that it was designed and commissioned purely to combat the future effects of global warming.

In fact, the seeds in the Seed Vault preserve 881,473 different types of plants from 233 countries in order to backstop the loss or failure of local seed banks....

White women forced to close burrito shop after hounded by cultural appropriation charges... Oregon Leftists Circulate List of Restaurants Engaging in 'Cultural Appropriation'

Reason.com reports that some have put together a spreadsheet of Portland, Oregon, restaurants that allegedly engage in "cultural appropriation":
The list, a Google Docs spreadsheet, includes about 60 Portland-area restaurants, the names of their white owners, and the kind of cuisine they serve. (For example, the list informs us that Burmasphere "was founded by a white man who ate Burmese food in San Francisco.") The spreadsheet also lists competing restaurants that are owned by people of color and urges customers to try them instead.
"This is NOT about cooking at home or historical influences on cuisines; it's about profit, ownership, and wealth in a white supremacist culture," wrote the spreadsheet's authors. "These white-owned businesses hamper the ability for POC [people of color] to run successful businesses of their own (cooking their own cuisines) by either consuming market share with their attempt at authenticity or by modifying foods to market to white palates. Their success further perpetuates the problems stated above. It's a cyclical pattern that will require intentional behavior change to break."

The spreadsheet seems to be a response to the controversy over Kooks Burritos, a Portland-area pop-up food truck run by two white women. In an interview with Williamette Week, Kooks owners Kali Wilgus and Liz Connelly explained how they fell in love with authentic Mexican tortillas during a visit to Puerto Nuevo, Mexico.

My whole life has been a single-handed fight against the ruling banality, for the human talent, free and playing.”

Boris Pasternak, whose novel Doctor Zhivago occasioned the Soviet Union’s greatest cultural defeat just sixty years ago, utterly despised the groupthink encouraged by the regime and embraced by so many intellectuals. At a meeting of Soviet writers, Pasternak once bravely rejected the official requirement that novelists and poets take orders like so many factory engineers. When the other writers protested indignantly, Pasternak replied: “Don’t yell at me. Or if you must yell, at least do not do so in unison.” In the ussr, everything was, or was supposed to be, in unison.

What was it about this novel that so angered Soviet authorities? ...

We heard Donald Trump was evil, a racist, sexist homophobe. Little evidence was presented to support this beyond Trump's desire to end illegal immigration and to block a massive influx of refugees from terror hotbeds from entering the United States.

It was all shameful, cynical politics. And some Americans are finally realizing they were lied to by the media and the Democratic Party....

How would you like a $200 billion tax increase?

The price tag on universal health care is in, and it’s bigger than California’s budget

It would cost $400 billion per year to remake California’s health insurance marketplace and create a publicly funded universal heath care system, according to a state financial analysis released Monday.

California would have to find an additional $200 billion per year, including in new tax revenues, to create a so-called “single-payer” system, the analysis by the Senate Appropriations committee found. The estimate assumes the state would retain the existing $200 billion in local, state and federal funding it currently receives to offset the total $400 billion price tag....

“A better future is only possible if your nations drive out terrorists and drive out extremists.”

...This year there will be just eight show gardens – down from at least 14 last year as some long-term supporters including the Daily Telegraph, which has sponsored a show garden at Chelsea for at least nine years, and Brewin Dolphin, which had sponsored gardens for five years, have pulled out. Other key names L’Occitane and Harrods have also made their excuses....

The missing show gardens have been partly replaced by more of the smaller Artisan and Fresh gardens and five Feel Good gardens fronted by BBC Radio 2 DJs, including the appropriately named Jeremy Vine. A couple of trade exhibitors have also taken larger spaces to develop their sales stand into gardens.

Mattingley said the changes had also enabled Chelsea to give space to new talent. “The show has been going for over 100 years and things are quite cyclical. When we had the credit crunch we had a moment when everything was reorganised and things go around again. We’ve got to work with it and be nimble on our feet and come up with new ideas and be creative,” he said.
