"The strapped middle class continues to flee bad schools, high taxes, rampant crime and poor state services. About one-third of the nation’s welfare recipients reside in California. Approximately one-fifth of the state lives below the poverty line."
...California — after raising its top income tax rate to 13.3 percent and receiving record revenues — is still facing a budget deficit of more than $1 billion. There is a much more foreboding state crisis of unfunded liabilities and pension obligations of nearly $1 trillion.
Soon, new gas tax hikes, on top of green mandates, might make California gas the most expensive in the nation, despite the state’s huge reserves of untapped oil.
Where does the money go, given that the state’s schools and infrastructure rank among America’s worst in national surveys?...
Buying a home on the California coast is nearly impossible. The state budget can only be balanced through constant tax hikes. Finding a good, safe public school is difficult. Building a single new dam during the California drought to capture record runoff water in subsequent wet years proved politically impossible.
No matter. Many Californians consider those existential problems to be a premodern drag, while they dream of postmodern trains, the legalization of pot-growing — and seceding from the United States of America.
One of the unspoken 'indications' in the medical sense of the ever-metastasizing Trump Derangement Syndrome is that the sufferers have a deep conscious/unconscious fear that Trump is right. What if the man they have excoriated unremittingly as a barbarian-racist-xenophobe-homophobe -misogynist-nitwit turns out to have been on the correct side of a fair number of issues on which they have failed, sometimes miserably, for decades? Talk about personality disintegration — it would be hari-kari meets the Wicked Witch of the West. Well, emotionally anyway.
The current North Korea crisis is a perfect case in point. Susan Rice — has this woman no shame — took to the pages of The New York Times to inveigh against Trump for "bluster" regarding the NORKS. The integrity-challenged former national security adviser was far from alone, however. Virtually all Democrats and their local media minions plus a good swatch of Republicans (including repellently vengeful John McCain) criticized the president for the same thing — using blunt language to counter the crazed dictator in Pyongyang when Trump should have been "diplomatic."
This although almost any grown-up not comatose knows that "diplomatic" language has been employed by the U.S. ad nauseam for that purpose for the last twenty-five years through three administrations with no discernible impact whatsoever. Indeed, "abject failure" would be an accurate characterization of our diplomatic policy vis-a-vis the NORKS. If you view this video of Bill Clinton extolling his administration's "successful," diplomatically-achieved nuclear deal with Pyongyang back in 2006, the word "nitwit" does come to mind, but it's not about Trump....
Did I say Chinese? Of course, I did, because they are the true audience for what is going on. Mr. Kim is a whack job sideshow. The Chinese are the ones with the power to do something and stop a conflagration. And, like the Democrats and the Never Trumpers, they may be more afraid of Trump than they let on. Unlike Obama, he has shown he is not afraid to use force — and he did that while having dinner with Xi Jinping. Friday night he is supposed to be having a chat with Xi.
By now we may all know what happened — at least the part the leakers deign to tell us — but we do not know what will happen. The facts on the ground have yet to be revealed.
What has been revealed, however, is the psychology of those attacking Trump on this matter. They fear that they will be revealed as having been fools for the last twenty-five years — and indeed they were.

...unfunded liabilities can be viewed as a $6,000 debt for every man, woman and child in the state of California.
Why should you care? Because it’s your pocketbook. If that hole is not filled up with meatier earnings and heftier contributions from public workers and agencies, taxpayers could be called upon to fill it directly.
This is where folks start talking about heady concepts like “generational equity.” Your children and grandchildren will be paying for the services that you are enjoying today. And there’s also the concept of “crowd-out;” as governments pay more into pension funds there is less available for services like roads and parks and libraries. They ask: Is that fair?...
We invited several public pension advocates to share their thoughts on the numbers. They said they were studying them, but did not respond by deadline.
“The relevant question to ask is: Is there sufficient political will to achieve major reform?”

The work of a conservative street artist known for skewering the liberal politics of celebrities and corporations has been deemed "hate speech" by Facebook, which shut his page down on Sunday.
The notice comes just days after the artist known as Sabo attacked Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg with posters disparaging his alleged presidential aspirations. "F*ck Zuck 2020" read the posters, the symbol after the "F" being a middle finger. They were hung in the dead of night last week in various California cities.
"Your page has been unpublished for using hate speech," read the message at the Unsavory Agents fan page run by Sabo.
Sabo is the artist's pen name and Unsavory Agents is the name of his website and business where his artwork is sold.

Google execs, facing an insurrection over Damore's firing, just cancelled an all-hands meeting about the memo. https://t.co/dSqGL3GDKF— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) August 11, 2017
What gave them that idea? https://t.co/WI7P86syax— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel) August 11, 2017
...First, and before I get into details here, James Damore did not say what most people think he said. He did not say women are unsuited to tech jobs. He did not say women only have tech jobs due to affirmative action. That is all bullshit piled on by those mau-mauing him, in an effort to expel someone whose questioning made them uncomfortable.
Why it made them uncomfortable is the fascinating part of all this.
It makes them uncomfortable because it shatters the brittle shell of their enforced narrative, which can only be kept by keeping everyone from saying anything against it. It is very much a “the king is naked” situation. If James Damore is allowed to say men and women aren’t different, the entire project of feminism shatters....
Not all the push, not all the affirmative action, nothing will bring about absolute equality when you’re requiring not only women reason exactly as men, but behave exactly as men, including in competition and social interaction.
That is because men and women aren’t equal. Which was the whole point of the memo James Damore wrote. The whole purpose was to try to find new ways to bring women into the workplace and take advantage of their unique characteristics, instead of forcing women to be men.
But in the world of Feminism feminine characteristics cannot be encouraged. The ideal woman of feminism is a male with a vagina. The ideal role for a woman is man manqué.
Because “feminists” such as they are hate women and everything women stand for. And created a philosophy to eliminate them while claiming loudly to be fighting for them.
This was why James Damore had to be silenced. He pulled back the curtain and revealed the anti-human project behind the curtain.

In 2013, Obama covered up existence of North Korea's mini-nukes https://t.co/4iDHMj0AUU— Mark R. Levin (@marklevinshow) August 10, 2017
You can chalk this up as another example of President Obama employing his signature strategy for dealing with sticky national security issues: Ignore, discredit or downplay. If the foreign policy crisis was too big to ignore, he would give a speech -- and kick the can down the road for another president to deal with.
In 2013, Obama not only downplayed the Defense Intelligence Agency's intelligence report about Korea's mini nukes -- He attempted to discredit it. The White House media echo-chamber was -- as always -- happy to go along with the ruse....
It was clear what Obama officials were doing in 2013. The DIA report represented inconvenient facts that threatened President Obama’s North Korea “strategic patience” policy -- a policy to do nothing about North Korea and kick this problem down the road to the next president. Obama officials tried to downplay the DIA assessment to prevent it from being used to force the president to employ a more assertive North Korea policy....

After billions in new gas tax, car tax, cap and trade, sleazy maneuvers last desperate attempt to cling to power https://t.co/ERE0eBfFeM— HJTA.org (@HJTA) August 9, 2017
In just the latest in a series of questionable maneuvers to protect Senator Josh Newman, the target of a recall by his constituents, it has been revealed that a lawyer for Senate Democrats held private meetings and exchanged texts, and phone calls with a member of the Fair Political Practices Commission. These contacts were kept secret until a reporter made a Public Records Act request to the FPPC.
The FPPC is currently considering a request by Democrats to allow other lawmakers to make unlimited campaign contribution transfers to Senator Newman, who is the subject of a recall for casting the deciding vote in favor of a recently-approved gas tax increase.
These private meetings raise new questions about both the impartiality of Commissioner Brian Hatch, a former firefighters lobbyist, and legislative Democrats, who face litigation from recall proponents for their last-minute approval of new hurdles that will delay the Newman recall.
“Tax-raisers are in a panic over the thought of losing their supermajority power to pass unlimited taxes,” said Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. “After having socked Californians with billions in new gas taxes, car taxes, and cap and trade charges, sleazy maneuvers are their last desperate attempt to cling to power.”

“What if technology could help improve conversations online?”
That’s the lowkey Orwellian message that greets visitors to the website of Perspective, Google’s new AI system for detecting (and potentially deleting, hiding, or burying) “toxic” comments on the web.
Perspective is still in early days of development, but in the future, you may have to adjust your speech in order to satisfy the lofty standards of Google. Otherwise, the company’s faceless AI might just have to “improve” you. Where’s Sarah Connor when you need her?
The good news is that, for now at least, Perspective is about as effective as C-3PO with a lisp. Software engineer and columnist David Auerbach has found the program woefully inept at sorting “toxic” comments from ordinary ones. Because the AI currently focuses on words rather than meanings, inoffensive comments like, “Rape is a horrible crime,” or, “few Muslims are a terrorist threat,” were assigned “toxicity” ratings of over 75 percent....
And they say that one of the company's founding values is "freedom of expression." What a joke. https://t.co/2UWUdQk4zl— David French (@DavidAFrench) August 8, 2017
