Kimberly Strassel: AG Barr gets attacked because his probe endangers powerful people
Here is the @KimStrassel column I just read on air: https://t.co/BVavvzdcu6 Send it everywhere and to everyone. Left wing media has a couple of million in its audience. Center-right media like my show and @WSJ have tens of millions more. Kim S. is over the target. So is AG Barr.

...Mr. Barr made real news in that Senate hearing, and while the press didn’t notice, Democrats did. The attorney general said he’d already assigned people at the Justice Department to assist his investigation of the origins of the Trump-Russia probe. He said his review would be far-reaching – that he was obtaining details from congressional investigations, from the ongoing probe by the department’s inspector general, Michael Horowitz, and even from Mr. Mueller’s work. Mr. Barr said the investigation wouldn’t focus only on the fall 2016 justifications for secret surveillance warrants against Trump team members but would go back months earlier.
He also said he’d focus on the infamous “dossier” concocted by opposition-research firm Fusion GPS and British former spy Christopher Steele, on which the FBI relied so heavily in its probe. Mr. Barr acknowledged his concern that the dossier itself could be Russian disinformation, a possibility he described as not “entirely speculative.” He also revealed that the department has “multiple criminal leak investigations under way” into the disclosure of classified details about the Trump-Russia investigation.
AG Barr has come under intense criticism from House Democrats for his handling of the Mueller report, including releasing a four-page summary before releasing the whole report, which Democrats charge was misleading.

The Big Lie That Barr Lied
The Big Lie That Barr Lied - my weekend @NRO column is up early https://t.co/mixZ8eBnaG
— Andy McCarthy (@AndrewCMcCarthy) May 3, 2019
I originally thought this was too stupid to write about. But stupid is like the plague inside the Beltway — one person catches it and next thing you know there’s an outbreak at MSNBC and the speaker of the House is showing symptoms while her delirious minions tote ceramic chickens around Capitol Hill....
Barr has known Mueller for nearly 30 years; when Mueller was the Criminal Division chief in the Bush 41 Justice Department, he reported to Barr, who was attorney general. It should come as no surprise, then, that Barr was not getting his information from Mueller’s staff; he was getting it from Mueller directly. Nor should it come as any surprise that, before releasing his March 24 letter to the public, Barr gave Mueller an opportunity to review it; nor that Mueller declined that opportunity — given that he knows Barr well, and knew Barr would not misrepresent the report (especially given that the report would soon be public).
Three days after Barr announced the report’s conclusions, Mueller sent his letter, undoubtedly written by his staff. Mueller could simply have called Barr on the phone, as he has done a million times; but the staff’s partisan Democrats wanted a letter, which makes for much better leak material. (The letter was, in fact, strategically leaked to the Washington Post Tuesday night, right before Barr’s Wednesday morning Senate testimony.) The day after receiving Mueller’s March 27 letter, Barr called Mueller and pointedly asked whether he was claiming that Barr’s March 24 letter articulating Mueller’s findings was inaccurate. Mueller responded that he was making no such claim — he was, instead, irritated by the press coverage of Barr’s letter....

..."The principle attack that the Democratic senators have marshaled upon you concerns this March 27th letter from Robert Mueller and it's an attack I want people to understand and just how revealing it is. This is their whole argument. They ain't got nothing," Cruz explained.
"So their argument is as follows, and let me see if I understand it correctly. You initially, when you received the Mueller report, released to Congress and the public a four-page summary of the conclusions. Then, on March 27th, Mr. Mueller asked you to release an additional 19-pages, an introduction and summary that he had drafted. And, indeed, in the letter, what he says is 'I am requesting that you provide these materials to Congress and authorize their public release at this time.' And the reason he says it is to fully capture the context, nature and substance of the office's working conclusion," Cruz recounted....
"Two weeks later, you release 448 pages, the entire report, which includes those 19 pages. Do I have that timeline correct?" Cruz asked.
"That's correct," Barr replied.
"Their entire argument is 'General Barr, you suppressed the 19 pages that are entirely public, that we have, that we can read, that they know every word of it.' And their complaint is that it was delayed a few weeks," Cruz said.
Cruz reiterated that Barr wanted to release everything at once instead of piece-by-piece.
"If that is their argument, I have to say, that is an exceptionally weak argument," Cruz said, as Barr laughed....

The horrific scenes in #Venezuela today are a stark reminder: You can vote your way into socialism, but you have to shoot your way out of it.

Venezuela banned private gun ownership in 2012, leaving citizens defenseless against a corrupt and oppressive government. https://t.co/T1tW4sTIJj

Venezuela's predicament is why the framers of the Constitution were careful to make the right to bear arms the second-most important of the amendments. @BecketAdams just wasn't expecting to hear it explained so succinctly on MSNBC, of all channels. https://t.co/vKC5vTICuh

There is no coup in Venezuela https://t.co/f0bThjZS9d

t’s unclear what will unfold in Venezuela now that interim president Juan Guaido has called for the military and citizens to take to the streets. What is clear, however, is that this is not a coup.
You wouldn’t know this from the early news coverage. “Trump Aides Back Unfolding Venezuela Coup Attempt,” reads a typical headline in Politico. CNN blared “Coup in Venezuela” in its chyron (it has amended its website to call it an “uprising”). The headlines match the messaging of Nicolas Maduro’s regime. As the country’s information minister tweeted, the event is a small group of traitors attempting a coup.
All of this is wrong, for a few reasons...
By the way, our Media is so far-left and loves fake news that they won't tell their shrinking readership that the Labour parties of both Canada and the UK and the Democrats here in the U.S. endorsed the socialists in #Venezuela.
— Ali Alexander (@ali) April 30, 2019
People died because of Media.
It is worse than this, though. The military does not, actually, have all the guns and all the power. There are guns in civilian hands in VZ -- specifically, Maduro selectively armed a 1.6M-member pro-regime citizen militia over the past few years: https://t.co/4RjQcbUMn6 https://t.co/rQG2MBnGqc

President @realDonaldTrump is a one man, economic, yellow vest of power; actually reversing decades of middle-class destruction.
Grassley gives Trump ultimatum: Lift tariffs or new NAFTA deal is "dead" https://t.co/7nSS413XLH pic.twitter.com/dgYoVkcsdm

1. Here's some perspective on this ridiculous op-ed. https://t.co/GU6TWGKskO
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
3. On Steel and Aluminum tariffs @ChuckGrassley threatens: " If these tariffs aren’t lifted, USMCA is dead."... Additionally: "Many Americans have been harmed by retaliatory tariffs. Mexican tariffs on U.S. pork, to take one example".
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
5. First, notice how obtuse he is. The USMCA was agreed upon by Mexico and Canada. The deal is written. Done. Both Mexico and Canada have agreed to terms. So it's not Mexico and Canada rebuking the USMCA it is Chuck Grassley.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
7. That type of obfuscation is typical amid the top K-Street purchased political class.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
Grassley is selling out American workers and the American middle-class on behalf of his K-Street donors (specifically Tom Donohue). But he needs to hide that aspect. pic.twitter.com/OQEbfSbvrE

11. Sure Mexico and Canada would love to keep their access to the U.S. market as open as possible and water-down any position that increases the U.S. economy. However, it is congress who are currently positioning themselves to eliminate the U.S. benefit, not Mexico and Canada. pic.twitter.com/jVBxVvJW2R

14. President @realDonaldTrump is disrupting the global order of things in order to protect and preserve the shrinking interests of the U.S. He has been fighting, almost single-handed, at the threshold of the economic abyss. So far he has been winning. pic.twitter.com/Tzi0RTaWT5

18. Familiar faces, perhaps faces we previously thought were decent, are now revealing their alignment with larger multinational entities and corporate benefactors. These were our hidden abusers and now Trump is forcing them into the sunlight. pic.twitter.com/9RhjP8YYzX
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
20. We are already familiar how China, Mexico and ASEAN nations export our raw materials (ore, coking coal, rare earth minerals etc.). The raw materials are used to manufacture goods overseas, the cheap durable goods are then shipped back into the U.S. for purchase.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
22. The road to a “service-driven economy” is paved with a great disparity between financial classes. The wealth gap is directly related to the inability of the middle-class to thrive. pic.twitter.com/an0TZMpncA
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
24. The destruction of the U.S. industrial and manufacturing base is EXACTLY WHY the wealth gap has exploded in the past 30 years.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
With that familiarity, did you think the multinationals would stop with only “DURABLE GOODS”?
26. The exact same exfiltration and exploitation has been happening, with increased speed, over the past 15-20 years with “CONSUMABLE GOODS“, ie food.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
Raw material foodstuff exported to China, ASEAN nations & Mexico, processed and shipped back into U.S. as a finished product.
29. Multinational corporations, BIG AG, are now invested in controlling the outputs of U.S. agricultural industry and farmers. This process is why food prices have risen exponentially in the past decade.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
31. The raw material (harvests writ large) are exploited by the financial interests of massive multinational corporations. This process is “contract farming”. pic.twitter.com/Sq5IkXR8DR
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
33. Behind this dynamic we find the international corporate and financial interests who are inherently at risk from President Trump’s “America-First” economic and trade platform. Believe it or not, President Trump is up against an entire world economic establishment.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
35. The biggest lie in modern economics, willingly spread and maintained by corporate media, is that a system of "global markets" still exists.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
It doesn’t.
37. Underneath that economic activity there are people who hold the reigns of power over the outcomes. These individuals and groups are the stakeholders in direct opposition to principles of America-First national economics. pic.twitter.com/O0sWp9dXm4
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
39. In the Western World, separate from communist control perspectives (ie. China), “Global markets” are a modern myth; nothing more than a talking point meant to keep people satiated with sound bites they might find familiar.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
41. The same is true for “Commodities Markets”. The multinational trade and economic system, run by corporations and multinational banks, now controls the product outputs of independent nations.
— TheLastRefuge (@TheLastRefuge2) April 29, 2019
43. U.S. President Trump smartly understands what has taken place; and more importantly he is working through a deliberate process to reverse it to the benefit of the U.S. economy. pic.twitter.com/7qAgIJI8pU
